Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 18-45mm lens
Best overall first camera for photos, family moments, and simple video
The EOS R50 is the easiest all-round recommendation for a new camera owner. Its 24.2MP APS-C sensor
provides a clear step up from a phone, while Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system can recognize and
track people, animals, and vehicles. The side-opening, fully articulating touchscreen is intuitive for
stills, selfies, and video; the built-in electronic viewfinder gives you a stable, glare-free way to
compose outdoors.
The included 18-45mm lens covers roughly 29-72mm in full-frame terms, which is a useful everyday range.
The R50 records 6K-oversampled 4K/30p video and Full HD up to 120p for slow motion. It does not have
in-body image stabilization, so lens-based stabilization and good handholding technique matter in lower
light.

Choose it if
You want one approachable camera for family, travel,
portraits, pets, and occasional video, with a viewfinder and a genuinely useful flip-out screen.
Know before buying
There is no in-body stabilization. The
small kit lens is ideal to learn with, but a brighter prime or longer zoom may be your next purchase.
