How to choose a wildlife lens

Start with the subjects you actually photograph

Small birds and distant wildlife usually reward 600mm, 800mm, or more. Large mammals, zoo and safari work, and animals that approach more closely can be easier to photograph with a 100 - 500mm or 60 - 600mm zoom. A wider starting focal length also helps include habitat and tell a fuller story.

Focal length changes with sensor format

On a crop-sensor body, the angle of view is narrower than on a full-frame body. For example, Nikon's 180 - 600mm provides a 270 - 900mm equivalent angle of view on a DX-format Z camera. This can help fill the frame with distant subjects, though it does not change the lens's physical focal length or maximum aperture.

Do not overlook aperture and light
